As we get ready to usher in the new year, it is only fitting that we take a brief look at 2007, before spending to much time looking forward to 2008. Weblog Tools Collection recently took a look back at 2007 for us by creating a 2007 WordPress timeline. If you’ve been with WordPress for most of 2007, you will probably enjoy looking back over the year and seeing the progress that the software has made. It just makes the plans for 2008 all the more exciting for WordPress users.

2007 started with the release of 2.0.6. Shortly afterwards, WordPress 2.1 was released. On May 16, 2007, we were given WordPress 2.2, which introduced widget integration into the base software. Then on September 25, 2007, we were given probably the biggest release of the year with WordPress 2.3, which introduced a tagging system and notification of WordPress plugin updates. If you haven’t already noticed, at some point yesterday the WordPress team released a crucial security update to the WordPress software.

If you are someone who schedules posts ahead of time, you’ll want to read this post explaining why your future-dated posts may be at risk.  Here is some more information about the release:

• Performance improvements for post sanitization when raw content is required (#5325).
• Changes to is_admin() to ensure that it is only true for admin pages thereby protecting against exposing draft posts. (#5487).
• Suppression of database errors unless WP_DEBUG is true (#5473).
• Check for valid database connection information during install and display and error if the install fails due to database rights (#5495).
• Support for a custom database down page to be displayed on database connection errors (#5500).
• Changes to make sure we are more selective in what we make clickable, this introduces different rules for different uri types ([6450]).
• Changes to wp-mail.php to escape the error messages when displaying them to avoid a possible XSS attack (#5484).
• Changes to ensure that the post password is only exposed by the xmlrpc method metaWeblog.getRecentPosts to users with rights to edit a post (#5535).
• Changes to the information exposed the wp.getAuthors xmlrpc method to reduce the information exposed and add a capabilities check (#5534).
• Addition of extra capabilities checks to xmlrpc methods ([6504]).
• Addition of extra capabilities checks to APP server ([6508]).
• Changes to validate_file() to improve its traversal attempt detection when running on windows ([6521]).

Over the past year, a new trend has developed where bloggers and small business owners are bypassing paying a web designer a lot of money for a custom theme and instead purchasing a premium WordPress theme for their website or blog. These themes usually feature a much more unique look and more functionality than the free WordPress themes available, are widget ready and include a more advanced control panel which allows you to setup the theme without touching any code. There is some great work out there, and more and more web designers are releasing premium WordPress themes each day, so I figured this was a good time to put together a premium WordPress theme gallery to help people looking to purchase a unique and highly customizable WordPress theme. Obviously everyone has different tastes so this method allows each individual to pick out the design that meets their personal needs!

In order for this post to maintain its relevance, it is updated regularly with new premium WordPress themes as they are released. When possible, I’ve also provided feature descriptions for the theme or theme framework, as well as links to view and/or purchase the theme from the author.

With the release of WordPress 2.3, users now have access to a built-in tagging system that previously required the use of a WordPress plugin, such as Ultimate Tagging Warrior (UTW) or Simple Tagging.

Unfortunately, both of these plugins offered some functionality that is not yet available in the default tagging system. This WordPress plugin is called Recommended Tags, and it was built only for the tagging system in WordPress 2.3 or above. Simply upload and activate the plugin, then begin using it to assist you with your tagging!

I had a reader request for some help with their blogroll recently. The WordPress blogroll has gone through many changes over the past year, and a lot of the WordPress themes authors out there didn’t update their themes with the new code used to call the blogroll.

The old code still works, but it doesn’t let you take advantage of the new blogroll capabilities.  If you have set up your blogroll with different categories, but noticed that all of them display under a single category, it is probably because your blog’s theme is still using the original code that didn’t allow for much configuration. You’ll probably find something like this:

<?php get_links()' ?>

or

<?php get_links_list()' ?>

If you want a more configurable code, you will want to use something like the following:

<?php wp_list_bookmarks('categorize=1&before=<li>&title_before=<h2>&title_after=</h2>&category_before=</n>&category_before=</n>&after=</li>&orderby=url'); ?>

This code will display your blogroll, but will let you have separate lists for your different blogroll categories. I’ve customized it to display the category title as a Header 2 and use bullet points to display the content, but you can do a variety of things.
