Google - NBC: Very Dumb Idea
Some buzz from Wall St: Analysts are saying that there is no "synergy" between NBC, a GE Unit, and the conglomerates' other units. So the analysts suggest selling it. That is nothing new, this kind of stuff is tossed around all the time on Wall St. But what is new is the suggestion that the best buyer might be Google.
Such a move would be a monumental error. Google is not a company that wants to or probably even knows how to own a major media company. Also, it has outlined a strategy that positions the company as a Switzerland of sorts with regard to major media companies. Buying one of them would kill that strategy.
And lastly, I think the coporate cultures would clash so deeply, AOL/Time Warner would look like a love match in comparison.

... unlike the cultures of Google and Doubleclick, which make a perfect match ;-)
will you eat this post if they buy NBC? :)
LOL !!!
There's no chance this will happen and no chance that Google could ever be viewed as Switzerland when they continue to own and acquire every major value driver on the web, at the expense of old media.
Can't agree more, John. As tempting as it might be, advertising businesses really need to leave media alone. Today an NBC purchase might alienate the other handful media bigwigs but what’s worse is that it will rattle the confidence of other media up and comers that might want to consider Google as an ad partner. Good for firms like FM though ;)
Good thing Google is not considering buying the unit (despite that the unit is not actually for sale). Sort of like a rumor based on speculation of a hypothesis. I just call this sort of report a fantasy...
That would be completely retarded. Only Yahoo would do something that stupid. Oh wait, they did with their Seth Loyd adventure.
There probably aren't a lot of mature businesses out there that won't clash with Google. That's going to be a huge challenge for them in the future.
Google already has its own TV program: Google_Current. User-generated content would be easy to find, sprinkle in some AdSense. Even if it buys NBC and fails, what difference does that make? TV's death is good for the Internet. And who knows, maybe people would start watching television again.
Can anyone say: AOL-Time Warner?
