What is a sitemap and why webmasters (site owners) need one?

Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines (like Google, Yahoo!, MSN or Ask.com) about pages on their sites that are available for crawling, which pages on your website has been changed and how often they're updated.
