BrainFuel 2007 Post-Holiday Gift Guide

Happy New Year, everybody! Didn’t get everything you wanted from Santa?

We’re rather a different lot over at BrainFuel, and so for our first ever Post-Holiday Gift Guide, we bring you our suggestions to make your new year a delight!

100 Catalog Envelopes (12″ x 15.5″)

Have a friend who is unorganized or even a boss or client? Give them a box of 100 Catalog Envelopes and a copy of Getting Things Done and tell them that every time it says “folder” substitute “catalog envelope” (we call them project folders at the office).

Dozen Cookies from Chocolate Star Bakery

These are the best cookies. These are some of the very best cookies you will find. Request a few of the “pink clouds” when you place your order. Great gift for clients.

Mister Shape T-Shirt

Get a Mister Shape T-Shirt for yourself or a buddy. Made by an Arizona Designer.

Pinsetter

Give a set of Pinsetter pins your friend their name or business name spelled out in cool 1 inch pins. Guaranteed to surprise. I’ve already got mine.

On Writing Well

A fabulous book about how to write engaging copy.

Free Prize Inside: The Next Big Marketing Idea

This book offers an excellent explanation of why most forms of advertising don’t work anymore, a bit of history about how we got into this situation, and some ideas for marketing. From Seth Godin.

Airborne Health

This stuff works and actually helps you prevent colds and the flu.

Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP 24.0-inch Flat Panel LCD Monitor

It will change the way you work. We have two of them at the Tornado Design office and I couldn’t recommend this type of monitor more.

The Electric Pocket

Made from the same stuff as wetsuits, the products from Built NY are all trendy colors and super cool. Check it out here.

Burton

Stumbled across the Burton web site this morning and wanted to share. I like the look of their site and the easy navigation.

Photojojo Writes Good Copy

Photojojo is resisting the urge to use photos in their design. Considering they are all about photos and their free email newsletter, it’s quite interesting. I think I know why, too. It’s because their product is all about the writing and ideas. Once they start showing photos into the mix people start to judge the photos.

So kudos to them for making an entertaining site with well written and entertaining copy.

Read the copy on this page. It’s very well done.

This is the screen I saw after I had signed up for their free email newsletter.

Jason Kirtley Portfolio Update

Jason Kirtley, a longtime reader of BrainFuel writes: Hey guys! Long time BrainFuel reader here and I am just wanting to send a note to let you all know I have launched a brand new version of my portfolio site for 2007!

I get a lot of emails like this and 90% of them aren’t worth sharing. This one is worth sharing. The design of this site, plus the portfolio rocks. I love the design style and wanted to share it.

XPLANE List of Clients

Have you ever had a client ask you to fit a whole bunch of client names on a single page? It starts to look cluttered. Here’s one way to solve it, from XPLANE.

What they’ve done is list all of the customers in a single font, clearly. Then they have a “lens” that you can pass over the names and it displays the logos you are over. I’m sure there are a bunch of ways you could vary this approach, such as a circular lens or even with the mouse cursor location.

Viddler: New Ability to Switch Videos Using JavaScript

There’s a big new feature from Viddler (new video sharing site) and have a demonstration in this post (RSS readers will need to click through). Essentially, you can now insert a single video player into your blog posts or web site page and “switch” between videos using text links. Try the links below the video to get an example.

Best of Viddler (chosen by yours truly): Excel Tips #1, Excel Tips #2, Eating Butter, Desert target practice, Rockfish, 7up - High Traffic Areas, Wallace and Gromit Soccamatic, Drive to Work - Chris’ drive today, My Air Hogs Airplane - Short Clip.

It’s called ViddlerSwitch and it uses a bit of JavaScript to make it happen. There is a bit of code to insert into the header of your HTML page, and then to switch a video you insert a simple link calling that JavaScript.

The full instructions on how to do this are on the Viddler Development Blog. I’d highly recommend taking a look, as it offers something nobody else is doing.

In other Viddler news, David Wilkinson calls Viddler a Web 3.0 service and that wraps it up for today.

Search-This Redesigns

Mark from What a Savage has redesigned his web site promotion web site called Search-This. He used an all CSS design that fills the entire screen, and works well on wide screen displays. Great job!

Merry Christmas

Here’s an addictive little game. See what kind of score you can get. I got 17.34 sec. Pretty impressive! Tip: keep the big ball towards the center.
